2017 - ongoing
Resilio Studio was engaged to design an outdoor living space for a family of five that includes a kitchen with pizza oven and BBQ, a dining space and a lounge with an outdoor fireplace. The structure was to be constructed from approximately 80% reclaimed materials, should not require a building consent and to be able to be built by the clients with the assistance of a licensed building practitioner - RJ Builders. The resulting structure is a simple post and beam rectangle and gable roof organised into three adjoined spaces to house the different functions. The primary structure is of locally sourced timbers and the infill walls, cabinetry and furnishings are constructed from a combination of readily available and some hard to find reclaimed materials - bricks, masonry blocks, decorative concrete bricks and a retro style outdoor fireplace. The process involved a dynamic interchange between client, designer and builder as newly sourced materials were continually incorporated into an evolving design. The final design set was documented in an easy to follow 'Lego style' instruction set to ensure that the construction methodology was fully understood by the client.
